On Thanksgiving weekend, Canton Ballet will take its holiday magic on the road, bringing excerpts from The Nutcracker to Steubenville’s beloved Nutcracker Village on Saturday, November 29, 2025, at the historic Masonic Temple.
The performance marks the first time in living memory that The Nutcracker has been performed live in Steubenville — an exciting opportunity for local audiences to experience the beauty and tradition of ballet up close. This special engagement also serves as the kickoff to Canton Ballet’s 2025 holiday season, leading into the company’s full-length production of The Nutcracker the following weekend, December 5–7, at the Canton Palace Theatre.
“Bringing The Nutcracker to Steubenville is a deeply meaningful opportunity,” said Jennifer Catazaro Hayward, Executive Artistic Director of Canton Ballet. “Many families in this region have never seen a live ballet performance. It is both an honor and a joy to share this beloved holiday tradition with new audiences — and to open our holiday season by celebrating the spirit of community and creativity that Ohio is known for.”
This collaboration between Canton Ballet and the Steubenville Cultural Trust (SCT) — both supported by the Ohio Arts Council — represents a shared commitment to expanding access to the arts and bringing high-quality cultural experiences to every corner of the state.

A Local Tradition in Craftsmanship
The Steubenville Nutcracker Village, one of Ohio’s most distinctive holiday destinations, began in 2015 as the vision of local craftsman and business owner Mark Nelson. His idea: to create a Christmas festival that would employ local artisans, train future artists, unite the community, and attract visitors to Steubenville’s historic downtown.
Today, that vision has blossomed into a celebration featuring more than 200 life-size nutcrackers, each hand-carved by employees of Nelson Enterprises LLC and hand-painted by the “Nutcracker Guild,” a group of artists-in-training. Every nutcracker — sponsored by local individuals and businesses — represents a unique character from local history, industry, or pop culture and is displayed throughout downtown from Thanksgiving through New Year’s Day.
In addition to the nutcracker displays, visitors enjoy a festive Christkindlmarkt, German Beer Garden, holiday parades, hayrides, mural tours, art exhibitions, nativity collections, and visits from St. Nicholas — all free to the public and celebrating the creativity and culture of the Ohio Valley.

Art as a Force for Community Renewal
The success of the Nutcracker Village inspired the creation of the Steubenville Cultural Trust (SCT) in 2021. Now a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, SCT works to “make and share the process of art,” curating festivals, art exhibitions, and beautification projects that revitalize downtown Steubenville and strengthen civic pride.
“The addition of Canton Ballet’s performance of The Nutcracker is an exciting opportunity for the city of Steubenville, as it is the first performance of the Nutcracker here in living memory,” said Gretchen Nelson, Vice President of the Steubenville Cultural Trust. “After 10 years of ‘playing Uncle Drosselmeyer’ and running a festival dedicated to the wide-spread fascination with the holiday tradition of The Nutcracker, we are thrilled to share our own love for the ballet with the greater Steubenville community.
Canton Ballet is one of Ohio’s most highly regarded arts institutions, and welcoming them to Steubenville is truly an honor. Their artistry, professionalism, and commitment to arts education embody everything we hope to cultivate here through the Steubenville Cultural Trust.”
